TEENAGE PREGNANCY A TICKING EXPLOSIVE

Updated: May 23, 2019

Teenage Pregnancy is a global issue now days. In Kenya the issue has become so common and is becoming a burden to Kenya since it affects underage girls between age 11 and 19 years. According to the daily nation news in November, 2018, Some 233 school girls from eight secondary and primary schools in Narok County aged between 10 and 19 years have been impregnated in the last 6 months and forced to discontinue with their learning. Most of these girls end up being expectant, because of several reasons like poverty, early sexual exposure by relatives, poor parenting styles, unregulated social media exposure, peer pressure, trauma among other reasons. The Parents and guardians of 21st CENTURY have become so busy looking for money to educate their children and give them a good life forgetting that these children require emotional attachment and guidance. Consequently, this has contributed to many cases of underage pregnancies. Underage girls are getting into opposite sex relationship without any guidance which makes them move too fast sexually without really wanting to do it and end up in what we call ‘UNWANTED PREGNACY.

Former education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed ordered investigations to determine the magnitude of teenage pregnancy in schools as she was releasing KCPE results of 2018 on 19th November, 2018. The health experts have many medical concerns for these kinds of mothers. They end up dropping out of school which tampers a lot with their future. The most heartbreaking thing is that there is low percentage that the teenage mothers get married to the fathers of their children which leads to single parenthood

They are many ways to prevent teenage pregnancy. Kenya Institute of Business and Counselling Studies (KIBCo) has many solutions to this. We provide mentorship programs to teenagers every holiday and also give counselling services to primary and secondary school students.
